The Title and the Cover
The name came from a newspaper headline: The 23-minute suite originally had working titles like "The Amazing Pudding." To find a title, Roger Waters looked through a newspaper and found an article about a woman with a plutonium-powered pacemaker titled "ATOM HEART MOTHER NAMED," which became the album and suite title.
The cow was the "least psychedelic" thing they could find: Seeking a non-psychedelic cover, designer Storm Thorgerson photographed a cow named Lulubelle III in a field, inspired by Andy Warhol's cow wallpaper.
The cover was text-free by design: Atom Heart Mother was the first Pink Floyd album without the band's name or title on the front, a choice that continued into the 1970s and reportedly baffled EMI executives.
Promotional cow udders: For US promotion, Capitol Records distributed inflatable pink cow udders to critics and DJs. 
Recording and Music
Stanley Kubrick wanted to use the title track: Director Stanley Kubrick asked to use the "Atom Heart Mother" suite for A Clockwork Orange, but the band refused due to his request for an indefinite license and creative control, though the album cover does appear in the film.
Ron Geesin had creative conflict with the orchestra: Ron Geesin, who co-wrote and arranged the title suite, reportedly had difficulties with the orchestra due to his unconventional notation.
"Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" has an infinite loop: On the original vinyl, the dripping faucet sound at the end of the track was designed to loop indefinitely on certain record players.
