Recording & Production Quirks
- Recorded in Under 24 Hours: Nearly the entire album (10 of the 11 tracks) was recorded in two lightning-fast sessions spanning a total of 28 hours over July 9 and 10, 1965.
- The Band Had Gigs: The reason for the break between the Saturday and Sunday sessions was that the legendary Stax house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, had pre-existing commitments to play their local Saturday night gigs around Memphis.
- Isaac Hayes on Piano: The future "Black Moses" and Academy Award-winning artist Isaac Hayes played piano on the album sessions as a session musician, contributing to the rich sound.
Unique Covers
- "Satisfaction" without Hearing the Original: Otis Redding recorded his cover of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" using only a transcribed lyric sheet, without ever hearing the original version. He even misheard the lyrics, famously singing "fashion" instead of "faction".
- The Rolling Stones Stole Back: Redding's horn arrangement for "Satisfaction" was so good that The Rolling Stones later confessed they adopted his arrangement for their own live performances.
- "Respect" was an "Afterthought": According to Redding, his iconic song "Respect" took only a day to write, 20 minutes to arrange, and just one take to record. The original was a plea from a man to a woman; Aretha Franklin later transformed it into the fierce feminist anthem we know today
