The tracklist for the combined Purgatory / Maiden Japan CD from The First Ten Years series is as follows:
Track List
- "Purgatory" (Studio Track)
- "Genghis Khan" (Studio Instrumental B-side)
- "Running Free" (Live in Japan)
- "Remember Tomorrow" (Live in Japan)
- "Killers" (Live in Japan)
- "Innocent Exile" (Live in Japan)
- "Listen With Nicko! Part III" (Spoken Word)
- "Purgatory" is a Remake: The song "Purgatory" is a faster, re-arranged version of a much earlier Iron Maiden song called "Floating".
- Maiden Japan Wasn't Planned: The band never actually intended to release a live EP. Toshiba-EMI, their Japanese label, wanted a special live album to commemorate the band's first trip to Japan, which led to the EP's creation.
- "Maiden Japan" is a Pun: The title is a direct pun on the classic Deep Purple live album Made in Japan, a nod to their influence on Iron Maiden.
The Artwork Swap
- The Original The Number of the Beast Artwork: The famous, controversial cover artwork featuring Eddie controlling the Devil, used for the The Number of the Beast album, was originally commissioned for the Purgatory single.
- A "Too Good" Cover: Band manager Rod Smallwood and the band members felt the artwork was "too good" for a mere single and decided to save it for their upcoming third studio album. Artist Derek Riggs had to quickly create a replacement cover for the Purgatory single, showing the Devil's face rotting away to reveal Eddie's face underneath.
